When you feel and look good all over, doesn’t it show that you’re on top of your game? Well, your hair is no exception. Your body has ways of telling you that your hair is hurting when it’s fallen onto hard times, you just have to know what to look for and how to remedy it. Dull, dead locks don’t have to be a permanent reality, and can be altered with something as simple as a good haircut.
Generally, healthy hair is not hard to spot, especially after a hair cut. Hair health is typically based on three qualities: porosity, elasticity and strength. Porosity is how much moisture your hair retains, elasticity is how much it can be manipulated without breakage, and strength is determined by how prone to breakage your hair is in general. When it’s healthy, hair is shiny and soft. Curly hair will also return to its original position after being stretched out and has a similar curl pattern through the whole strand.
When your hair is dead, it’s a whole different ball game. Hair in need of help doesn’t have that shine that healthy hair does, due to a lack of reflective materials in the top layers. It will appear brittle and dry and breaks easily. When dyed, unhealthy hair absorbs color too quickly and loses it too quickly as well. There is also little movement in it. This can be caused by anything from the weather to overuse of hot tools.
A good haircut can remove much of the dead weight from your hair, encouraging new growth that is healthier than the old dead locks. Try using a shampoo and conditioner that is rich in protein, which helps restore the hair’s strength. You might also consider sulfate-free shampoo. Learn to work with your hair’s natural texture, rather than against it, and don’t use so many hot tools.
